You've chosen a hotel at the Livigno ski resort. Now all you have to do is figure out how to get there. If you've selected a package deal, and transportation is included, all you have to worry about is not missing your flight or a train connection. You can't fly directly to the ski resort area, and there's no train station either, so you'll need to reach the resort area by bus from a nearby airport or train station, or by automobile (not recommended, but if you must travel that way, bring along chains). "Nearby" does not necessarily mean close by, as Livigno is somewhat isolated. Livigno is tucked away in a part of the Italian (Lombardy) Alps in the South Tyrol region, and is surrounded on three sides by Switzerland.
Getting There
If you are coming by way of Switzerland, you can take a train from Zurich, St. Moritz, or a number of other places and travel the last leg of your journey by bus, which should only take an hour or so. If you fly into Zurich, Milan, or Munich, you can take a bus from the airport to Livigno. The bus ride takes about 3 hours from Zurich or Milan and about 4.5 hours from Munich. When making your booking reservations for a hotel at the Livigno ski resort, ask about transfers. Some package deals offer transfers at a discount for the last leg of the journey, which will be by private coach or bus.
When to Go
Ski season generally opens the last week in November or the first week in December. There are a number of online sources where you can check for snow conditions. If you are planning a ski vacation to this destination, booking a hotel at the Livigno ski resort anytime from mid-December into April should be safe. Once you've arrived, check the lift hours so you can be the first one down the slopes on a powder day! No matter which hotel at the Livigno ski resort you choose, getting to the slopes should be the last of your worries. Most of the hotels and other accommodations are within walking distance of a lift line. The ski resort features 11 ski lifts, 14 chair lifts, and 6 cable cars/gondolas. You won't cover all of the runs the resort has to offer in a day, or in a week for that matter. There are plenty of runs suitable for beginning and intermediate skiers as well as some excellent ones for the more advanced skiers. After a long day on the slopes you'll have much to look forward to, ranging from relaxing in a hot tub, enjoying a great meal as only the Italians can prepare, or you can go shopping.
Booking Your Hotel
Choosing Hotels in Livigno Italy is both easy and difficult. It is easy because there are somewhere between 150 and 170 hotels, apartments, and bed and breakfast establishments to choose from. It is difficult only in the sense that the more choices you have, the harder it may be to find the hotel you want. Don't let that worry you. You can either do a little up-front research or let the travel agent do it for you. Give the agency your price range and the features you're looking for, and let the agency do the rest.
Although you should have little trouble booking a room, bear in mind that Livigno Hotels has become one of the more popular ski destinations, and attracts a large amount of tourist traffic during the summer as well. Livigno also happens to be located in a duty-free zone, so the town attracts lots of shoppers. For these reasons, it makes good sense to book your room in a hotel at the Livigno ski resort area well in advance.
